What is classified as heavy transport?

Heavy transport is the transport of goods that do not comply with the regulations for standard road transport in terms of length, width, height, and/or mass. The maximum weight also depends on the axle configuration, the permitted maximum mass is limited to a maximum of 40 tons. Sometimes higher masses are allowed before requiring a permit, some countries in the EU have agreements with each other for the higher masses. The Netherlands has 50 tons as standard maximum mass. In the Netherlands the transport has a maximum width of  2.50/2.75 meters. Which is equal to the chassis width of a trailer. For everything wider than 3.5 meters, a permit must be applied for.

For example, oversized, heavy private yachts, the largest of the 4 Yachts was approximately 18 meters long and had a weight of 63-tonnes. Because of the large height and size, the best transportation option is to move the yachts by inland shipping. The customer for this transportation case is a specialist in maritime & shipping and arranged the transportation by water. For the movement of the heavy transport of the Yachts, two 7-axle semi-low-loaders and two 4-axle semi-low-loaders were used.

Another example of heavy transport, Lubbers transported a steam boiler, steam room and pipes.

The steam boiler Lubbers transported was 9 meters long and weighed 35-tonnes. The offloading location was a challenge, there was limited space as the location was close to a busy road. This took thorough preparation and careful planning, besides that the main risks had to be determined and examined. The main risk involved heavy transportation, crane lifting, and a small workspace surrounded by unpredictable traffic.
Lubbers prepared a detailed transport, crane, safety, and traffic management plan. The plans were discussed with the customers and involved contractors to keep everyone informed about the transportation. The transport was executed with a heavy 8×4 truck and a 3-axle low-loader. A compact 110-ton telescopic crane was used for hoisting and lifting activities.4 traffic controllers were deployed to guarantee a safe working environment and avoid accidents.

What kind of trailers are used for heavy transport?

The trailers that are mostly used for heavy/exceptional transport are Flatbeds, mega’s, step decks, and low loaders. The large diversity in the number of axles and extendable lengths. The trucks in our fleet consist of a 4×2, which can transport 40-tonnes up to an 8×4 which can transport 120/160-tonnes of goods. Lubbers’ vehicle fleet consists of 130 trucks and 380 trailers. In addition to the standard exemptions, we have an extensive network of agents who can provide the necessary exemptions in a short time, which enables us to respond quickly to the customer’s wishes.

Ready for the wind sector

Wind turbine components of 30 meters long, 50-tonnes prefabricated concrete beams or 20-meter high storage tanks. Lubbers can transport it. We also take care of the route surveys, transport engineering, permits and documents, supervision, operating manuals and project management. We can move to a maximum weight of 100-tonnes and up to a length of 50 meters. Lubbers Wind Services also offers a one-stop-shop concept for dismantling, transportation and (partly) recycling of old wind installations.

The difference between heavy and exceptional transport.

Heavy transport is mostly the transport of goods that do not comply with the regulations of standard transport. Exceptional transport mostly happens in the following sectors, such as oil and gas, renewables, nuclear, geothermal and dredging. However, they do overlap with each other. The preparation arranging permits, documents and transport supervision are all similar depending on what goods need to be transported.
