1st of January 2022: The next step for Brexit

The UK leaving the European Union (Brexit) has made it more complicated to transport goods between the EU and UK, the custom clearance formalities have been raised and result in longer waits for the transport. Custom and export documents require up-to-date knowledge of the Customs regulations. The variety of customs documents often raises the question, which solution fits best with my logistic situation. 
The UK no longer has a license for free freight traffic in the EU. EU freight haulers can perform up to two (instead of three) cabotage transports inside the UK. All Dutch ferry terminals and most short sea terminals collaborate in the Portbase platform. You have to use this platform to pre-notify your transport to the UK. If you fail to do so, you will not be admitted to the terminal. 

UK customs adapting after Brexit
On the 1st of January 2022, customs will be stricter in the UK, the requirements are laid down in the BOM (Border Operating Model). By preparing your custom clearance in time you prevent your goods from being stopped at the UK border or even in the Dutch ports as the customs become stricter. 
From the 1st of January 2022, the following regulations apply
  • Custom declarations in the UK can not be postponed anymore.
  • Besides that, veterinary health certificates for meat or dairy products are required and have a designated border control for the goods to pass.
  • Pre-arrival of the goods, a security declaration, or an entry summary declaration must be submitted to UK customs. 
  • Your goods are allowed to be directed to an inland border facility for document or physical check, only if these checks cannot be done at the border.
  • You must submit an "arrived” export declaration if your goods are moving through the border locations that use the arrived exports process.  
  • Simplified declarations can be used, you first need the authorization to be allowed to use the declarations. Despite that, it can take up to 60 days to have the completed checks you need.

What should you keep in mind when transporting goods to the UK? Prepare the transport well to avoid delays as much as possible. Road haulers that want to ship goods to the UK by ferry from Rotterdam have to follow 5 steps:
  1. Comply with the transport company rules
  2. Pre-notify your export documents with Portbase
  3. Check the buffer parking locations and rules
  4. Map your route
  5. Start your transport, keep following developments

  2. A valid VAT-number
  3. Under which INCOterms your transaction has to take place
  4. How has your customer arranged customs clearance, VAT, and import taxes, and duties
